The UVU Career Development Center recently hosted an event titled, "Employers Tell All." This event had panelists from: Overstock.com, Wasatch Mental Health, Academy Mortgage, and Fidelity Investments. The panelist were recruiters and provided very beneficial advice for job-seeking students during the event.
Here are some of the things I learned:
1. You leave for a reason. The reasons should usually be for passion, for growth, for better opportunity.
2. Bring ideas on your own as an intern or even a full-time employee. It shows that you are listening and taking initiative. It shows how involved you want to be.
3. Know the company's culture and personality and see if you fit it or like it
It was helpful to hear how recruiters think and what to be prepared for. Among the many advices and tips learned, however, one stood out.
One student asked the panelists if they made mistakes and how often. All the panelists agreed that they made mistakes. The panelist from Overstock.com expanded on the answer and expressed how making mistakes everyday is normal. She encouraged students to make mistakes a learning experience. You just have to remember to "Fail Forward."
In a PR world where methods of communication are changing and risks are taken for growth and innovation, it comes to no surprise that mistakes are inevitable. However, we can capitalize on mistakes by embracing it as a learning experience and improving. Ultimately, failing forward.
